29th June 2021 – Is hydrogen coming of age?
There is no doubt that hydrogen is an incredibly versatile fuel, but it has its drawbacks including the requirement to compress and store it under high pressure, in high density, and over a very long period as a gas or in liquidised form. However, it has a significant advantage when directly used to reduce emissions in some high energy intensity manufacturing operations. or in fuel cell drives, or when used as an input product to produce hydrocarbons. Of course, hydrogen can also be fed into the gas grid or used for re-electrification as fuel in gas turbines. This event will outline hydrogen’s vital role in bringing CO2 emissions to net-zero by mid-century to meet the goals of the Paris climate accord.
